What is the difference between axial and radial live tool holders?

An axial holder points the tool along the turret's axis, for drilling and milling on the face of the part. A radial holder points it perpendicular to that axis, for cross-drilling and milling on the diameter.

What does VDI40 mean?

VDI is a standard for lathe turret tool-holder interfaces, and 40 is the shank size. Holders must match your turret's VDI size and mounting style.
