A horizontal machining center (HMC) mounts its spindle sideways. Parts sit on pallets, often on a fixture column called a tombstone, and a built-in rotary axis presents each face of the part to the spindle. Chips fall away from the cut, and one pallet can be loaded while the other is machining.

That makes HMCs a fit for repeat production runs where setups and spindle time matter. When comparing them look at pallet size, travels, the rotary (B-axis) resolution, spindle taper and speed, tool capacity, and the control and electrical requirements.

What is a tombstone fixture?

A tombstone is a vertical column bolted to an HMC pallet. Parts are clamped to several of its faces, so the rotary axis can bring each face to the spindle in one setup.

What power does a horizontal machining center need?

It varies by machine. Each listing shows the electrical requirement when the seller recorded it (voltage, phase and kVA). Confirm it against your plant supply before you buy.
