How to read a Fadal model number
Fadal VMC model numbers encode the X and Y travels in inches. The first two digits are the X travel and the last two are the Y travel:
| Model | X travel | Y travel | Z travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| VMC 3016 | 30" | 16" | 20" |
| VMC 4020 | 40" | 20" | 20" |
| VMC 6030 | 60" | 30" | Check the listing |
The 3016 and 4020 figures match machines we have listed. Suffixes such as HT or A indicate variants, so always read the specification on the listing.
Typical configurations on the machines we see: a 10,000 rpm spindle, a CAT40 taper and a 21-position automatic tool changer.
The 88HS control
Many Fadals from the 1990s and 2000s run Fadal's own 88HS control. It is programmed in G-code, and it is a different environment from the Fanuc-style controls many shops now use. If you buy a Fadal, check these before the machine moves:
- Memory battery. Older controls keep programs and parameters in battery-backed memory. Ask when the battery was last replaced, and back up parameters and programs.
- Program transfer. Ask how programs get on and off the machine (RS-232 or a serial adapter) and confirm you can use that method in your shop.
- Options. Rigid tapping, extra memory and a fourth-axis board appear as options on different machines. Confirm what's actually installed, not just what the model could have.
- Support. Ask who in your area can repair the control, the drives and the spindle. A machine that is cheap to buy can be expensive to keep running if there is nobody to call.
Is a used Fadal a good buy?
It can be, for the right shop. A Fadal can add capacity at a modest price if you're comfortable with the 88HS control and have a service plan. It's a poorer fit if you need the latest probing, networking or software, or if you want a control your operators already know. The deciding questions are the ones above: condition, control support and your own programming workflow.
Fadals in our inventory
We currently list a 1997 Fadal VMC 3016 and a 1994 Fadal VMC 40. Both have an 88HS control, rigid tapping, a coolant system and all available manuals listed. See every vertical machining center in stock, and use the inspection checklist before you buy any used machine.
